Kawaii (meaning super cute in Japanese) characters are my specialty, so I thought it would be fun to make these little cactus characters smile. Make a whole grouping of these kawaii cactus cuties for your Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and your guests will not be disappointed! In fact, they would make a great party favor to take home.

1Materials you will need:

  • Bright green felt
  • Sewing scissors
  • Mini cupcake liners
  • Thin, black permanent marker
  • Red marker
  • Flower Stickers
  • Coffee Grinds + small spoon
  • Hot Glue

Step 1:  Fold a long rectangular piece of green felt in half. Using sharp sewing scissors, cut out a cactus shape leaving the top ‘fold’ of the felt in tact if you can. This makes it easier for the cactus to stand up straight. Cut various cactus shapes out, using the ones pictured here as a guide.

Step 2: Add a face on each cactus using a permanent marker for the eyes and mouth, and a regular red marker for the cheeks.

Step 3: Using hot glue, adhere the bottom of each cactus into the base of a mini cupcake liner. Add some flower stickers to each plant for an extra cute detail.

Step 4: Scoop a small amount of ground coffee into each cupcake liner for the ‘dirt’.

Step 5: Display your kawaii cactus friends as a centerpiece on your table for Cinco de Mayo and don’t forget to enjoy some fresh guacamole and chips!
