If you currently run a creative business or it is on your radar to start one in 2015 then this new book ‘Craft a Creative Business‘ (Amazon UK/Amazon USA) by Fiona Pullen should be your go-to resource.
Design & Layout
Firstly, I love the design of the book. It’s not a black and white read from cover to cover, but rather a colourful delight of different sections, which means you can dip in and out if you prefer. It’s a really easy book to navigate and there is no technical jargon – it just lays out the steps you need to follow to set up and run a creative business.
What Does It Include?
The key areas covered are:
- Online & offline selling
- Branding & Promotion
- Setting up as self employed (UK)
- Social Media
- Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
- Goal Setting
There are also practical activities that you can carry out to ensure you are heading in the right direction and advice from business owners in the handmade arena, who are already selling successfully.
The book starts by looking at the pros and cons of becoming self-employed and this is an important element in your journey. You need to fully understand whether working for yourself is for you. If you discover that it is, then the book explores researching your creative field and the legalities of running a business through to presentation, marketing and setting up a website.
There really isn’t another book out there that so clearly covers all the practicalities of establishing and growing a creative business. The book does emphasise the UK market but there is much you can learn from it wherever you are based.
When you are reading a book like this you want to know that the author has already succeeded in building her own creative business. Fiona Pullen is the creator of The Sewing Directory, which is a hugely successful site for finding local and online sewing suppliers, sewing courses and sewing groups.
The book has been written from the standpoint of Fiona’s own success at building her business and so you can trust her extensive knowledge and experience.
The lovely people at Search Press have provided us with 2 copies of the book to give away. There will be two winners, drawn randomly, and each will win one copy of the book.
