Valentine’s Day is a holiday full of flowers, chocolate, cards and kisses. But this Valentine’s Day why not take it one step further and give a gift, made with love, that will keep on giving through out the whole year.
This year I made vanilla extract at home, they need to sit for about 6 weeks so I got a head start by making them a little early. These are so easy and people absolutely love them. Vanilla is perfect for baked goods, adult beverages and my personal favorite: pumpkin spiced baked oatmeal!
I bought my beans at Beanilla.com and used the Bourbon Vanilla beans because they are the most common but you can use any variety you desire. I wanted to make eight vanillas at 4oz each so I ordered 20 beans. This will usually run for just under $20 making it incredibly affordable. You will also need glass bottles to keep your extract in. You can order them from this same website or even have some fun with it by going thrifting. They should be about 4oz. Next you will purchase a large bottle of vodka. The higher the proof the better but you can shop for cost if that is your main concern.
To Make The Extract You Will Need To:
1.) Cut the vanilla beans in half and then split them down the middle, careful not to cut all the way through. Inside vanilla beans there is the “caviar” which will flavor your vodka so you will want it to be as accessible as possible.
2.) Then place the half beans in each bottle, I used two and a half beans in each four oz jar.
3.) Let the vanilla set, shaking it ever couple days to check for color. It is so much fun to watch these change color and the aroma is incredible.
That’s it! It’s the easiest thing ever and you look like the most thoughtful crafter on the block. We took simple adhesive labels and wrote “Vanilla” on each of them. When we give them out we will attach a simple recipe that includes vanilla extract to personalize the gift.
Happy Valentines Day to you and yours. Enjoy your new extracts and the delicious goodies you will make with them.
