Homemade Outdoor Decorating Ideas for Fall

For many people, fall is their favorite time of the year. The changing of the seasons brings about a relief from the hot weather of summer, beautiful leaves in the trees, and the countdown to the holidays. It’s also a great time to redo the look of your outdoor living space.

Since it’s already August and fall is going to be here before we know it, we’re going to take a look at a few tips for decorating the outside of your home the DIY way to get it ready for autumn.

Wreath

A wreath is a classic staple of fall decorating. Whether you want to use them indoors or out, in the bedroom or on the front door, they work anywhere. They’re very easy to make too. You can find basic wreath forms at virtually any arts and crafts store to get you started. From there, it’s just a matter of decorating it with items that represent the season. Use flowers, corn husks, bows and ribbons, whatever you like to give it that fall theme. This can be a fun project for kids as well, letting them decorate a wreath that reflects their own personality.

Planters

Planters filled with autumn foliage, like goldenrod, helenium, and fall crocus, make a great way to add a splash of color outside the home. For a neat craft project, try making your own. If you’re really handy, you can build one using wood and a few tools. If not, taking something you don’t use anymore, like a large bowl, coffee can, or watering pail, and turning it into a planter is just as fun. You can go from as simple to as complex as you want, opting to just give it a coat of paint in fall colors or adding fancy designs to make it really stand out. For an even better floral display, put your planters atop bales of hay angled out on the front porch, a festive look that my own mother used to always do.

Pumpkins

When you think of fall, you can’t help but think of pumpkins. Whether it’s pie, Halloween, or just the color orange, they’re bound to be in the front of your mind. Since they come in so many sizes, it’s easy to decorate with them. Two extra large pumpkins can frame the front door. You can use medium sized ones to line the front walk of your home. And for a really fun piece, take a wall candle display with a few holders and put some miniature pumpkins on it. Placing it near the front door of your home or out on the patio is a great way to get into the swing of fall.

Accessories

Finally, don’t forget about the accessories around your home. If you’ve got cushions on your patio furniture, change your regular ones out for some festive fall colored ones. If that’s not an option, just adding a fall blanket can give it a new look. Try incorporating seasonal items into your outdoor displays as well. Take a rake, tie a bow around the top of the handle, and lean it against a wall next to an arrangement of fall flowers. Paint “Welcome” in black on an orange piece of wood, fix it to the front of the rake, and you’ve got an inviting fall themed display for your patio. Remember to get creative here – the only limit is your imagination!
